From Global Response (www.globalresponse.org):

Thanks and congratulations to all who wrote letters to the new Prime Minister in the Bahamas. Our campaign seeks the creation of a Marine Protected Area on Bimini island, to stop destruction of unique mangrove and marine ecosystems by the expanding Bimini Bay Resort.

The new government administration is getting the message!

An article in The Tribune quotes the new Minister of National Security, Tommy Turnquest, saying that the Bimini Bay Resort & Casino project should not have been approved by a previous administration, given its disproportionate size to the island’s community and its potential impacts on the ecosystem.

He further stated that future large-scale resorts need to be reevaluated in an effort to the preserve island communities and ecosystems.

These statements bode well for a new environmental consciousness in the Bahamian government. We will keep the pressure on for a decision to create a Marine Protected Area on Bimini – and soon, before the Bimini Bay Resort’s bulldozers destroy the last remaining mangroves.
